Bradley Speaks on Black History
Mayor Tom Bradley delivered the keynote address Monday as Black History Month was kicked off with an outdoor ceremony at Los Angeles City Hall.
Acknowledging the progress made by blacks through the years, Bradley recalled Challenger astronaut Ron McNair, a Lake City, S.C., native who once lived and worked in the Los Angeles area.
“Ron McNair was among the earliest of our blacks to serve in the space program. We’ve come a long way in that field,” Bradley said. “We’ve come a long way from the days when we first began this celebration here on the steps of City Hall. . . .”
About 300 guests, invited by Our Authors Study Club, a branch of the Assn. for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, attended. The group will coordinate a number of events throughout February.
