John Williams scored 28 points, including a layup with 11 seconds left, to give LSU a 63-61 Southeastern Conference basketball victory over Auburn Tuesday night at Auburn, Ala.

The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 25 because Williams and another LSU player came down with chicken pox and several other players were exposed to the illness.

Auburn (12-8 overall and 6-4 in the SEC) was leading, 61-59, when Derrick Taylor of LSU (17-6, 5-5) hit a jumper to tie the score with a minute left. Taylor stole a pass with 35 seconds left to set up Williams’ game-winning basket, which snapped LSU’s four-game losing streak.

Oregon State (9-9) led, 30-26, at halftime, and was still ahead, 40-35, when Jose Ortiz scored an inside basket with 13:53 to play.

UTEP (19-3), using its size and quickness advantage, outscored the Beavers, 19-5, over the next 8:13 to take control. The score was tied, 44-44, with 10:09 left, but UTEP scored 20 of the game’s final 25 points to hand Oregon State its fifth defeat in six games.
