Share

When the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 1986 season at Hollywood Bowl officially begins July 8, music director Andre Previn will be represented as composer rather than conductor. The orchestra’s 65th summer in Cahuenga Pass will open with Previn’s “Principals,” conducted by Lawrence Foster. Jean-Pierre Rampal will be soloist in three works for flute and orchestra.

During the 50-event season, Previn will preside at concerts only during the week of Aug. 12-16. Besides Foster, guest conductors include David Atherton with his San Diego Symphony, Paavo Berglund, Ivan Fischer, Gunther Herbig (all in Bowl debuts), Kent Nagano (in his Philharmonic debut), Zubin Mehta with his Israel Philharmonic, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Leonard Slatkin, Erich Kunzel, John Lanchbery, John Williams and David Zinman.

Soloists making Philharmonic or Bowl debuts include pianists Vovka Ashkenazy, John Lill and Ursula Oppens and singers Mark Du Bois, Susan Dunn, Shawna Farrell and Lewis Dale von Schlanbusch.
