PCAA Roundup : Las Vegas Wins; Long Beach Trounced

Eldridge Hudson scored 20 points and Anthony Jones added 18 to lead ninth-ranked Nevada Las Vegas to a 92-73 victory over Pacific Thursday night at Las Vegas.

It was the 13th straight win for the Rebels, who are 22-2 overall and 11-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Pacific is 11-11 and 4-7.

Las Vegas started slowly as Pacific raced to a 26-20 lead after 12 minutes. But Jones scored 12 points in the last five minutes of the first half to lead Las Vegas on a 25-11 tear and the Rebels led at halftime, 45-37.

Hudson, filling in for injured forward Armon Gilliam, scored 16 second-half points to keep UNLV in front.

Pacific’s Domingo Rosario scored 25 points.

Utah State 119, Cal State Long Beach 95--Greg Grant scored 33 points and Bill Floyd added 17 as Utah State won easily at Logan, Utah.

Floyd connected on 7 of 9 first-half shots to help the Aggies build a 58-37 halftime lead.

Utah State, 7-12 overall and 3-7 in the PCAA, led by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Grant is within 31 points of the all-time Aggie scoring mark, which is held by Wayne Estes at 2,001.

Long Beach (5-17, 1-10) was led by Morlin Wiley with 18 points.

San Jose State 78, New Mexico State 74--Forward Ricky Berry scored 31 points to lead San Jose State (14-7, 7-4) at San Jose. New Mexico State is 14-5 and 8-2.

The Spartans, who led, 35-23, at the half, took their biggest lead of the game at 64-47 when the 6-8 Berry made two free throws with 7:51 remaining.

However, the Aggies outscored San Jose State, 23-8, over the next 7:16 to pull within two points at 72-70 with 35 seconds left in the game.

With the score 74-72, Spartan reserve guard Herb Simon sandwiched four straight free throws around a Virgil Harris layup, ending the scoring.

The game included a bench-clearing brawl after Berry fouled Wendell Wright with 2:28 left. There were no injuries.
