$120,000 Bond Set in Mormon Case
A judge on Friday set bond at $120,000 for a Mormon documents dealer charged with murder in the bombing deaths of two persons.
It might take until Monday for Mark W. Hofmann, 31, to raise the bond, said defense lawyer Brad Ruch. Fifth Circuit Judge Paul Grant set the bond--$20,000 cash and $100,000 in property--and scheduled an April 14 preliminary hearing for Hofmann, who has been in custody since his arrest Tuesday.
Hofmann is accused in the Oct. 15 deaths of stockbroker and documents collector Steven F. Christensen, 31, and Kathleen W. Sheets, 50, wife of former Christensen business associate, J. Gary Sheets. A third bomb critically injured Hofmann a day later in what police believe was an accident.
Prosecutors allege that Hofmann, who also faces theft and fraud charges, was involved in fraudulent document deals, some involving the Mormon Church, and that he planted the bombs because Christensen and Gary Sheets had uncovered the crimes.
