A Los Angeles-bound commuter airplane with 13 people aboard returned to San Luis Obispo Airport and landed safely Friday after a hydraulic system failure forced the pilot to extend the nose gear manually.

No injuries were reported after Wings West Flight 725 landed about one hour after takeoff, an airline spokeswoman said. The 11 passengers on the Beech C-99 twin-engine commuter plane were transferred to the next available flight.

Shortly after takeoff, a warning light indicated a hydraulic problem during the retraction of the nose wheel. Pilot Mary Gould and her co-pilot turned the plane back to San Luis Obispo and used a hand crank in the cockpit to extend the nose wheel.
