Tennis Roundup : Gilbert Upsets Connors; Pernfors Stuns Curren
Brad Gilbert upset Jimmy Connors, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and unseeded Mikael Pernfors eliminated Kevin Curren, 6-4, 6-2, Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the $315,000 Volvo U.S. National Indoor Championship at Memphis, Tenn.
Stefan Edberg easily advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Johan Kriek, and Anders Jarryd eliminated Paul Annacone, 7-6, 7-5.
At Toronto, Peter Fleming defeated Glenn Michibata, 6-3, 6-2, in a $150,000 Nabisco Grand Prix tournament, and will meet Czechoslovakia’s Milan Srejber in one of today’s semifinals. Srejber beat Glenn Layendecker, 6-2, 7-6.
At Houston, Luke Jensen of USC upset top-seeded Steve DeVries of California, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, in the second round of the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships but then lost to Arkansas’ Joey Blake, 7-5, 7-6.
Brad Pearce of UCLA reached the semifinals when Richard Bergh of CS Long Beach retired with an injury, while USC’s Ricky Leach lost Stanford’s Dan Goldie, 6-3, 6-3.
