Cardinals Find Themselves on Denkinger’s Side
The St. Louis Cardinals have asked a Nebraska man to stop selling posters that depict umpire Don Denkinger’s controversial call in the sixth game of the 1985 World Series because they were not authorized by the team, cast a bad light on a successful season and represent a trademark infringement.
“We feel that this is a case of a loyal Cardinal fan going a little too far,” Cardinal Vice President Gary Blase said. “The Cardinals don’t feel that Denkinger’s call is something to keep dragging out of the closet. It’s over and done with. It’s part of the past, and let’s get on with next season.”
Tim White of Grand Island, Neb., said he had sold 400-500 of the posters but would stop selling them. “Anyone who has one will just have an expensive collector’s item,” he said. “These things could be worth a lot of money someday.”
