Sixth-Ranked Long Beach Women Stop UCLA

Cindy Brown had 25 points and 8 rebounds, and Shaundra McMichael came off the bench to score 12 points as Cal State Long Beach defeated UCLA, 85-69, in a nonconference women’s basketball game Friday night at Pauley Pavilion.

Long Beach, ranked sixth nationally, is 18-2, while UCLA dropped to 9-13.

UCLA’s top scorers were Anne Dean, with 20 points, and Jaime Brown, with 19. Long Beach’s Carol Brandt and Missy Rand each scored 13.

UCLA led, 34-24, with 4:45 left in the half, and the score was tied, 36-36, at halftime. But with 15:10 left, Long Beach began to pull away.

Joan Bonvicini, Long Beach’s coach, said: “I was very pleased with the way we came back in the second half. Shaundra McMichael came off the bench to spark us.

“We shot better from the line, but I’m still not pleased with our rebounding. This is the third straight game in which we were outrebounded.”

UCLA outrebounded Long Beach, 38-29.
