Share

The Year of the Tiger--4684 by the Chinese lunar calendar--begins today, as ethnic Chinese in the Southland kick off a week of New Year celebrations that will culminate with the traditional Golden Dragon Parade through Chinatown next Saturday.

Lion dancing and firecrackers will precede today’s “8th Annual Firecracker 10K Run,” set to start at 8:30 a.m. on North Broadway in Chinatown.

Many ethnic Chinese will spend the day in visits with friends and in family gatherings, which often include feasts featuring lucky foods believed to bring wealth.

Public celebrations in Chinatown will resume at 5 p.m. Friday, when a community carnival will get under way along North Hill Street at College Street. The carnival will continue next Saturday and Sunday, running from noon until late evening. Traditional and contemporary dances, martial arts demonstrations and musical performances will take place next weekend at various Chinatown plazas.

The Golden Dragon Parade, with lion and dragon dancers, floats, bands and drill teams, will begin at 4 p.m. next Saturday on North Spring Street. Astronaut Taylor Wang, the first Chinese-American in space, will be grand marshal.
