After nearly eight years of law school, James T. Hart is about to graduate. “The Paper Chase” is drawing to a close, and the final episode, set to air this summer on the Showtime cable channel, will feature Hart (James Stephens) getting his degree from Prof. Kingsfield (John Houseman). The series premiered on CBS in September, 1978, later moving to cable with first-run episodes.

Robert Conrad, Sam Waterston, David Soul, Richard Roundtree and Yvette Mimieux star in “The Fifth Missile,” a three-hour drama NBC has scheduled for Feb. 23. It’s about a war game conducted aboard an American nuclear submarine which threatens to launch World War III.

John Barbour, former movie critic at KNBC Channel 4 and co-host of “Real People,” is returning to the tube next month. He’ll produce and host “The Barbour Report,” a comedic magazine show that’s getting a two-week tryout on ABC. It will air weeknights at midnight March 10-21, preempting “Eye on Hollywood” during that period.

Briefly noted: Kevin McCarthy will guest-star in Saturday’s episode of “The Golden Girls,” playing a wealthy suitor to Blanche (Rue McClanahan). . . . Andrew Duggan has replaced James Stewart in an episode of “Remington Steele” in which Stewart was to have played a retired Air Force general. NBC said Stewart had to bow out because of a chronic ear infection. . . . Phyllis Frelich, the deaf actress who starred earlier this season in the TV movie “Love Is Never Silent,” has a guest role in Tuesday’s episode of “Spenser: For Hire,” playing a newspaper columnist.

What happens when a young man falls in love with his stepsister? The question will be explored in “Two Young People,” a TV movie being made for CBS. The young people will be played by Dermit Mulroney and Megan Follows, with their married parents portrayed by Dee Wallace-Stone and Bill Bixby. James Naughton plays Wallace-Stone’s ex-husband.
