Local News in Brief : Van Nuys ‘Head Shop’ Owner Gets Fine, 2 Years’ Probation
- Share via
The owner of a Van Nuys “head shop” was ordered Tuesday to pay $1,500 in fines and placed on two years’ probation for his conviction on misdemeanor charges of selling drug paraphernalia.
Van Nuys Municipal Judge Leslie A. Dunn also ordered the man, Jack Herer, 46, to discontinue selling drug paraphernalia at his Burbank Boulevard store.
The sentence was stayed pending Herer’s appeal.
After his Jan. 21 conviction, Herer changed the name of the store from High Country to Tobacco Country to satisfy prosecutors’ complaints that the name promoted drug use.
Herer was the first San Fernando Valley businessman to go to trial on charges of violating a 1983 state law that makes it a misdemeanor to sell pipes, spoons, vials and other items typically used to ingest controlled substances.
