Sidewalk-Fee Appeal Fails to Gain Backing : Local News in Brief
A group of Canoga Park homeowners who are fighting city assessments of up to $2,200 for repairs to their sidewalks got a cool reception Tuesday from a Los Angeles City Council committee.
The Public Works Committee sent the protest of homeowners on Lena Avenue back to the full council with no recommendation for a reduction of the assessments.
Under a 75-year-old policy, the city assesses property owners for repairs to sidewalks in front of their homes.
Several homeowners on Lena Avenue complained that it was unfair for them to pay for damage caused by the roots of mulberry trees planted with city approval on city-owned property.
After San Fernando Valley Councilmen Howard Finn and Ernani Bernardi said they agreed with the complaints, the council sent the protested assessments to the committee.
City staff members told the three-member committee that the assessments are based on the city’s costs and that any reduction would damage the sidewalk repair program.
The council is scheduled to consider the matter Friday.
