A campus custodian and a woman arrested in the robbery and assault on a female UCLA student last December have been released pending further investigation, a Los Angeles County district attorney’s spokesman said. William Pennix, 25, who works at the University Guest House, where the attack occurred, and Diane Garland, 30, of Compton were arrested last week and booked on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder. Garland’s boyfriend, Mario E. Washington, 25, was also arrested and remains in custody on a parole violation, authorities said. The 21-year-old student, whose name was not released, had her throat slashed with the jagged edge of a broken vase and was hospitalized for several weeks.
