Angel shortstop Dick Schofield, who was scheduled to go to salary arbitration Feb. 17, has signed a one-year contract with the team for $210,000. Schofield initially was asking for $220,000. The Angels’ offer was $175,000.

Another Angel, center fielder Gary Pettis, appeared before an arbitrator Tuesday, but no decision will be announced until later this week.

Left-handed pitcher Frank Viola of the Minnesota Twins won his arbitration case and will earn $674,000 for the 1986 season, but his teammate, infielder Gary Gaetti, lost. The split of the two arbitration cases gave the players four victories and the owners six in the 10 decisions rendered this year.

Viola, winner of 18 games each of the past two seasons--he was 18-14 with a 4.09 earned-run average last year--was paid $350,000 in 1985. The Twins offered him $525,000 for this year.

Gaetti, a .246 hitter with 20 home runs and 63 runs batted in during the 1985 season, when he made $415,000, had asked for $675,000. Instead, he will settle for the Twins’ offer of $515,000.
