Hermosa Beach : Shuttle Memorial Planned

Share

The City Council this week established a Challenger Shuttle Memorial Committee to consider proposals for a memorial in the city to the seven Challenger space shuttle astronauts who died last month. Among them was Gregory B. Jarvis, who lived on 6th Street with his wife, Marcia.

The committee will consist of two residents appointed by the council, a member of the Community Resources Commission, a Chamber of Commerce director and a member chosen by the city’s elementary school district.

The council appointed Steven Crecy of 2nd Street and Michael Sheets of Monterey Boulevard as the resident members. Crecy had contacted the city about being on the committee, and Sheets was a friend of Jarvis, city officials said.

The committee will have 90 days to study proposals, including suggestions that the city establish a scholarship fund or dedicate a plaque, a stone marker, a park sculpture or a grove to the astronauts.

City Manager Gregory Manager said the committee was given three months to come up with a recommendation so it could solicit more suggestions from the community, come up with cost estimates and consider the wishes of the Jarvis family.
