Raiders Deny Tampering With Kelly

The Buffalo Bills have asked National Football League officials to investigate possible tampering with USFL quarterback Jim Kelly by the Raiders, according to the Buffalo News.

The Bills took the action Thursday in the wake of reports that Kelly’s agents had spoken to the Raiders about his future after his anticipated departure from the United States Football League.

The Bills made Kelly their first draft pick of 1983, so they hold exclusive NFL negotiating rights to him through the first day of the 1987 college draft.

Al LoCasale, executive assistant of the Raiders, denied that there had been any tampering. “The accusation that the Los Angeles Raiders may have tampered with quarterback Jim Kelly is totally absurd,” he said.

“There has been no contact, directly or indirectly, with Jim Kelly, his agent or representatives by anyone with the Raider organization regarding Jim Kelly’s future services.”

Kelly’s agent, A.J. Faigin, also denied that any discussions had taken place and characterized meetings between Kelly and Raider officials as coincidental and social.
