Anaheim : Vacation Dispute Stalls School District Talks
- Share via
The union representing about 650 non-teaching employees in the Anaheim elementary school district has reached an impasse in contract negotiations.
The sticking point is the union’s demand for an extra vacation day for full-time employees with at least 10 years of seniority. Those 120 employees now have 15 vacation days.
“We’re not going to strike; we haven’t even taken a strike vote,” said Linda Huff, president of the California School Employees Assn., Chapter 54. Huff said that the union, however, is asking that the state mediator order a formal process called “fact-finding.”
Huff said that the school administration has agreed to offer extra vacation days for some non-teaching workers, who now have less than 15 vacation days. But the administration has refused to increase vacations beyond 15 days.
James D. Brier, superintendent of the school district, said a 16th day of vacation for 10-month employees would force the school district to hire substitutes.
