The 1987 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s golf championship tournament will be held at the University of New Mexico, school officials have announced.

Linda Estes, women’s athletic director, said that UNM’s South Course was chosen by NCAA officials.

One of the reasons the NCAA committee gave for awarding UNM the tournament is that the course is recognized nationally as a competitive facility, Estes said.

UNM’s South Course is the site of the Tucker and Dick McGuire Invitationals, two college golf tournaments.

“In my first year as coach, in 1984, one of my goals was to bring the NCAAs to Albuquerque,” said women’s coach John Speary. “It will definitely help us with recruiting some top golfers.”

The tournament, scheduled May 27-30, 1987, features 14 of the top teams in the nation, Speary said.

UNM was the host school for the NCAA men’s basketball championships in 1983, the national women’s tennis championships in 1983, and the American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women skiing nationals in 1976.

New Mexico State University announced recently that it had been awarded the 1988 NCAA women’s golf championships.
