Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jack M. Newman issued a preliminary injunction to close the Weekday Sunday School operated by the Santa Monica Foursquare Church, 1220 20th St. The state attorney general’s office sought the injunction on behalf of the state Department of Social Services because the church repeatedly refused to obtain a license to operate what the state contends is a child day-care center. Church attorney Albert B. Cunningham refused to participate in the court proceedings, arguing that the state does not have authority over church activities. That authority comes only from Jesus Christ, Cunningham said outside court. He added that he would advise his clients, Ronald and Linda Norris, pastors of the church, to continue operating the school.
