A woman who fled the scene of an accident in which an 8-year-old girl was killed was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days in jail.

San Diego Municipal Judge Joe Littlejohn gave Gwendolyn Bryant, 22, until March 4 to begin her sentence so that she can make arrangements for her two children to be cared for while she is in custody.

Bryant, who pleaded no contest Dec. 18 to charges of hit-and-run driving, was fined $200 and placed on three years’ probation.

The parents of the victim, Annastacia Hall, watched the sentencing. The girl was killed Dec. 5 in Southeast San Diego after she reportedly rode her bicycle into the path of Bryant’s car.

Robert Stall Jr., Bryant’s attorney, noted that the case involved only running from the scene of the accident, not vehicular manslaughter. No manslaughter charge was filed as it was believed that Bryant was not at fault in the accident.

“It is a tragedy. She panicked. She made a mistake,” Stall said.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Frank Brown asked for one year in custody. The Probation Department recommended a six-month term.
