Bruins Add Georgetown to Schedule

Coach Walt Hazzard said Tuesday that the UCLA basketball schedule in 1987-88 would include a game at Georgetown, and that Georgetown would play at Pauley Pavilion the season after that.

Hazzard said: “It seems like the only way to shut up some people about East Coast-West Coast basketball is to take it head on. We’re not ducking anyone.”

Earlier this season, after a game at Notre Dame, Hazzard mentioned that a nonconference series would have to be dropped from the Bruin schedule. Tuesday he said: “We will have to eliminate a nonconference game. I think that will be DePaul. There has never been a question of whether we would continue to play Notre Dame. There was never a question.

“I just wish I could share with you why I have a problem with the Notre Dame coach.”

After a little bit of urging, Hazzard continued: “The Notre Dame coach (Digger Phelps) was quoted in your paper (The Times) last year criticizing Coach (John) Wooden for running up the scores in games many years ago. But he said this at a time when Coach Wooden was at (his wife) Nell’s bedside for her last days.

“Coach Wooden always was a gracious winner, and he always was a gracious loser. I didn’t think that shot was called for at that time, and I told the Notre Dame coach after the game that I thought he owed Coach Wooden an apology.”

Personal feelings aside, however, the Notre Dame-UCLA series will continue.

Hazzard said that the series with Temple also would continue--UCLA will play Temple at the Spectrum in Philadelphia next season--and that the series with Loyola Marymount probably would not. He said that there had been some talks with Pepperdine regarding possible scheduling “in the not-too-distant future.”

Two years from now, the UCLA schedule will include nonconference games with Georgetown, North Carolina, Louisville and Notre Dame. In sum, Hazzard said, “We’ll play.”
