Manhattan Beach : Bus Fares Subsidized

Share

Manhattan Beach residents who ride RTD buses to public high schools in Manhattan Beach or El Segundo will have most of their bus fare paid for by the city.

The City Council voted Tuesday night to pay $8 toward the $12 monthly bus pass for students for the remainder of this school year. The council placed a $5,000 cap on the subsidy, which will come from the city’s portion of the county transit tax.

The push to subsidize the passes was led by Councilman Jim Walker, who argued it is government’s responsibility to provide free public education. “I don’t think government should allow a free education for any student to be infringed,” said Walker, who proposed that the city pick up the entire cost of the monthly passes. “The issue here is getting kids to school for nothing.”

City Manager David J. Thompson cautioned that a free pass could be abused by students and that the city could end up paying for passes that students never use.
