NHL Roundup : This Time, Oilers Don’t Let Leafs Upset Them

The Toronto Maple Leafs upset the Edmonton Oilers, 11-9, last month, but the Oilers got even with a 9-5 win over the Maple Leafs Wednesday night at Edmonton, Canada.

Wayne Gretzky, Glenn Anderson, and Paul Coffey scored two goals apiece, and Randy Gregg added four assists to lead the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.

Toronto took an early 2-0 lead but trailed, 3-2, by the end of the first period and was behind, 7-2, heading into the third.

The Oilers then connected for two short-handed goals, giving them six in three games and 21 for the season. Gretzky scored on a breakaway for his 40th goal at 14:31, then Coffey blasted his 35th at 16:23. It was Coffey’s fourth short-handed goal in three games and eighth of the year, a record for NHL defensemen.

Montreal 4, Washington 4--Canadien center Bobby Smith scored two goals, including the tying goal at 4:59 of the third period, at Montreal.

Montreal moved into a first-place tie in the Adams Division with the idle Quebec Nordiques. Each team has 70 points.

Smith, standing near the boards, took a wide-angle shot that deflected off Washington defenseman Scott Stevens and rebounded past Capital goalie Pete Peeters.

Dave Christian scored two goals for the Capitals.

Pittsburgh 5, Winnipeg 2--All-Star center Mario Lemieux scored two goals as the Penguins extended their home unbeaten streak to 10 games.

Lemieux, with 36 goals and 105 points, has scored in 16 consecutive games, a career high and the longest current streak in the NHL. He is the second leading scorer in the NHL this season behind Gretzky.

Pittsburgh is 8-0-2 at home since Dec. 28. The Penguins have a three-point lead over the New York Rangers in the race for the final playoff spot in the Patrick Division.

Hartford 6, Buffalo 4--Dean Evason had two goals and two assists at Buffalo as the Whalers won their second straight game after going 10 games without a win.
