Police in Reno, Nev., have arrested a transient sought in connection with the Jan. 29 bludgeoning death of his 73-year-old stepgrandmother in La Habra, a police spokesman said.

Reno police made a routine traffic stop about midnight Friday and took into custody Charles Wayne Keeler, 27, who was driving his stepgrandmother’s 1974 Mercury Comet sedan, La Habra Police Capt. Michael Burch said.

Keeler is being held on suspicion of the murder of Lois Bacon, who was found dead in her apartment in the 900 block of East Greenwood Avenue, Burch said.

Reno police stopped Keeler for failing to obey a stop sign, then matched the auto’s license plate with the car sought in an all-points bulletin issued by La Habra police, Burch said. Detectives from the La Habra Police Department will go to Reno to question Keeler, who is being held without bail, and to determine whether he will oppose extradition, Burch said.

Bacon’s body was found Jan. 30 by a daughter who became concerned when she did not respond to telephone calls, Burch said.
