NHL Roundup : Sutter’s Goal Helps Flyers Beat Capitals; Lead Is Now 11 Points

Ron Sutter scored the game-winning goal at 17:15 of the second period as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Washington Capitals, 3-1, Saturday at Philadelphia.

With the victory, the Flyers increased their Patrick Division lead over second-place Washington to 11 points, although the Capitals have played three fewer games.

Philadelphia was held to four shots in the first period, but Brian Propp gave them a 1-0 lead when he beat Washington goalie Pete Peeters at 17:57.

Sutter made it 2-0, and Pelle Eklund scored the final Flyer goal at 4:36 of the third period.

Goalie Bob Froese had a shutout until Washington’s Dave Christian scored at 12:46 of the third period.

Boston 6, Edmonton 5--Barry Pederson scored at 2:12 of overtime and the Bruins rallied to overcome the Oilers at Edmonton.

Keith Crowder, who fed Pederson for the winning goal, scored his third goal of the game at 17:11 of the third period forced overtime.

Boston staged an earlier rally from a 4-1 deficit, but Wayne Gretzky’s 42nd goal gave the Oilers a 5-3 lead at 9:47 of the second period.

Former King Charlie Simmer got the Bruins close again with a goal at 8:17 of the final period.

Montreal 6, Hartford 3--Mike McPhee scored the tie-breaking goal at 3:28 of the final period and the Canadiens took sole possession of the Adams Division lead by beating the Whalers at Montreal.

Montreal now has 72 points, two more than Quebec.

The loss continued Hartford’s winless streak at the Montreal Forum to 23 games (0-18-5), since the Whalers joined the NHL in 1979.

St. Louis 5, Pittsburgh 3--Ron Flockhart scored with 10:59 left at Pittsburgh and the Blues ended the Penguins’ unbeaten streak at six games.

It was the Penguins’ first home loss since Dec. 28.

Pittsburgh center Mario Lemieux had two assists to extend his point-scoring streak to 18 games.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Detroit 2--Bob Bourne scored twice and added an assist, and Patrick Flatley assisted on three goals at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Islanders handed the Red Wings their seventh straight defeat.
