Craig McMillan scored 13 points, including two free throws with 11 seconds to play, and Arizona edged Oregon State, 55-53, Saturday night at Corvallis, Ore., to maintain a share of first place in the Pacific 10 Conference basketball race.

McMillan hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer to beat Oregon State in overtime earlier this season at Tucson.

The Wildcats (20-7 overall, 11-3 in the conference) never trailed and led by as many as 14 points before Oregon State’s late rally.

Four straight points by Darrin Houston and a basket by Jeff Hales brought the Beavers (11-12, 7-7) within 53-51 with 24 seconds left before McMillan’s free throws clinched the victory.

Houston scored 15, and Jose Ortiz and Steve Woodside added 11 apiece for the Beavers.

Washington 79, Washington State 70--Chris Welp’s career-high 35 points set a school record as the junior center helped the Huskies beat the Cougars at Pullman, Wash., and stay even with Arizona.

Welp broke a record of 34 set by Washington’s Don McMillan in 1944, also against Washington State at Pullman. Welp also grabbed 13 rebounds for the Huskies (17-9, 11-3).

Welp scored 21 of his points in the second half, including 11 in a 17-5 run that broke the game open shortly after halftime.

Washington State (13-14, 7-7) took an early lead behind the play of Otis Jennings, who scored 18 points. The Cougars had a nine-point lead, but Washington battled back for a 33-32 lead.

The Cougars went back ahead at halftime, 34-33, before the Huskies took control for good.

The Huskies grabbed their biggest lead at 62-47 with 7:18 left before the Cougars rallied. With Winkler and Sanders hitting from the outside, Washington State pulled within 74-68 with 37 seconds left, but came no closer.
