Authorities were looking into the cause of a fire that all but destroyed a small shopping center in Long Beach, causing an estimated $1 million damage. Firefighters continued to bulldoze the walls of the structures to put out hot spots caused by burning roof insulation. Long Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief George Morgan said. The fire began in an abandoned McCoy’s mark and quickly spread to a row of stores at the corner of Carson Street and Orange Avenue. Firefighters from 10 engine companies battled the blaze for about 2 1/2 hours before controlling it. There were no injuries. Seven business firms, including the former grocery store, Vermillion’s drug store, an ATA appliance store, a dog grooming store and a shoe repair shop were destroyed, he said.
