New England Patriots’ All-Pro offensive guard John Hannah underwent reconstructive surgery on both shoulders at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Hannah, a nine-time Pro Bowl player who just completed his 13th NFL season, was operated on by team physician Dr. Bertram Zarins to repair torn rotator cuffs in his right and left shoulders.

The operation marks the second time Hannah has had shoulder surgery, with the rotator cuff in his left shoulder being repaired in January, 1984.

Hannah, who is expected to remain hospitalized for five or six days, experienced soreness in the shoulders throughout the 1985 season, which ended with the Patriots’ 46-10 loss to the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX.

His rehabilitation is expected to begin in four to six weeks, Zarins said.
