College Baseball Roundup : Roumimper Leads UC Irvine to 8-6 Win Over Loyola

First-baseman Gene Roumimper went 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in, including a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly, to lead UC Irvine to an 8-6 nonconference college baseball victory Tuesday at Loyola Marymount.

Right fielder Mike Fay had a solo homer in the fourth inning and second baseman Ed Clark went 2 for 3 with an RBI as the Anteaters (5-5-1) handed the Lions their second loss of the season. Loyola had won 12 of its first 13 games and is ranked No. 13 in the country.

The winning pitcher was Bo Kent (2-1), who came on in relief in the sixth.

In other college baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 10, Chapman 6--The Titans scored five runs in the fifth inning in the nonconference game at Hart Park in Orange to overcome the Panthers.

Chapman (6-6) took a 5-1 lead with a five-run third inning. Fullerton (9-3) came back to make it 8-6 in the fifth. The big hit for the Titans, ranked fourth in the country, was a bases-loaded pinch-hit triple by Alan Stankiewicz.

Rob Wolkoys went 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs for Chapman. Paul Johnson (1-0) got the win for Fullerton and Gary Buckels picked up his first save. Buckels pitched the last 4 innings and didn’t allow a run. Jon Hulshof (1-3) was the losing pitcher.

In community college action:

Fullerton 13, Long Beach City 5--Jeff Oberdank had three hits to lead the Hornets to the nonconference win at Long Beach. Fullerton (4-4) scored in every inning after the third. Anthony Moreno chipped in with a two-run double and Ty Moreno added a triple and an RBI for the Hornets. Gary Stotereau (2-0) went five innings for the win. Long Beach is 1-3.

Los Angeles Valley 12, Orange Coast 2--Chris Haslock went 5 for 5 with four RBIs to lead the Lancers (4-2) in a nonconference game in Van Nuys. Sal Villasenor added four hits and four RBIs. Drew Ricker picked up the win, pitching eight shutout innings before allowing two OCC runs in the ninth.

San Diego City 8, Saddleback 2--San Diego’s Scott Schaldach pitched a seven-hitter with four strikeouts as Saddleback (3-2) dropped a nonconference game at San Diego. Center fielder Bill Morgan went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs for San Diego. Morgan singled and tripled.
