One person died and several others were injured when 20 vehicles piled up in thick fog on Interstate 15 in Rancho Cucamonga Friday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

“People were probably driving too fast in the fog,” CHP spokesman Ron Kauffman said. Visibility was under 100 feet at the time of the accident, patrolmen reported.

Half a dozen ambulances rushed to the northbound lanes of the freeway near Foothill Boulevard where the accident occurred at about 7:20 a.m. The northbound freeway was closed to traffic while tow trucks cleared the vehicles.

The name of the victim was withheld pending notification of relatives.

A spokesman for San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland said three people were treated there for minor injuries. One other victim was treated at Ontario Community Hospital and released.

It was the second fog-related accident within 12 hours on the freeway. Eleven cars and eight trucks piled up in the southbound lanes near Jurupa Street in Ontario Thursday night, causing minor injuries to two people, a CHP spokesman said.
