Navratilova and Lloyd Advance to Semifinal Round at Oakland

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova and No. 2-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd advanced to the semifinals of a $150,000 women’s tennis tournament Friday night with straight-set victories.

Navratilova defeated No. 5-seeded Zina Garrison, 6-2, 6-0; Lloyd downed No. 7-seeded Wendy Turnbull, 6-1, 6-3.

Navratilova will play unseeded Kathy Jordan today, while Lloyd will face No. 6-seeded Helena Sukova.

Earlier, Sukova beat Alycia Moulton, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, and Jordan, who upset two-time defending champion Hana Mandlikova Wednesday, beat Robin White, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Navratilova disposed of Garrison in only 47 minutes, never suffering a service break while breaking Garrison five times.

“(Garrison) didn’t get a chance to come in,” Navratilova said. “I was hitting the shots deep--not giving her a chance to put her all-around play in.”

Lloyd broke Turnbull in the third, fifth and seventh games of the first set in their match.

In the second set, Lloyd lost her serve, but managed to break back. After Turnbull broke serve to move within 4-3, Lloyd broke back and served out for the match.

Service breaks--20 in all--highlighted the Jordan-White match. The third set was tied 5-5 before Jordan broke White and held her own serve.

Moulton survived five double faults to win the fifth game of the final set, in which there were 13 deuce points, but eventually succumbed to the 6-foot-2 Czechoslovakian.

“I changed the timing,” she said of her serve. “It’s more right than what it used to be, but obviously it was not perfect today.”
