Tustin : School Board Approves Contract for Teachers

Share

Trustees of Tustin Unified School District unanimously approved a three-year contract with their teachers Saturday, ending a two-year struggle punctuated by a walkout last fall.

Board members unanimously approved the pact less than 24 hours after teachers had approved it. The teachers’ last contract expired June 30, 1984.

The new contract includes no pay raise for the 1984-85 school year but boosts salaries by 10% this year, retroactive to September, and provides a 6% raise next year.

The contract also provides for binding arbitration of disputes. Last September, the school board broke off negotiations with the Tustin Educators Assn., firmly rejecting a proposal of binding arbitration.

“I think it’s significant that all five board members took time (during Saturday’s board meeting) to say they wanted to work with everyone in the district,” said Maury Ross, district superintendent.
