A Border Patrol vehicle Sunday accidentally struck and killed a Mexican man who was trying to cross the border illegally, a California Highway Patrol official said.
The man was identified as Pablo Antunes Lopez, 27, the official said.
About 11:05 p.m. Sunday, Border Patrol officials responded to a report of a group of illegal aliens trying to cross the border near Otay Mesa and Alta roads. Lopez apparently was hidden behind a four-foot-high bush near the intersection and was run over by the vehicle driven by Border Patrol Agent Robert Fagen, the official said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
At least 16 other illegal aliens were hidden in bushes nearby, the official said.
