Britain’s leading amateur golfers will have to submit to doping tests, even though officials can’t see how drugs could be of benefit on the course.
Keith Wright, secretary of the English Golf Union, said the tests have been ordered by the British Sports Council as part of its crackdown on drugs in sport.
“We shall have to carry out these tests if we are to qualify for all the grants we can get from the Sports Council,” Wright said. “That is part of their rules.
“As far as we know, though, there is no benefit that can be derived from drugs on the golf course.”
