A Stellar TV Campaign Slated for AIDS Research

Elizabeth Taylor, Brooke Shields, Matthew Broderick and Carol Burnett will be on TV in the upcoming weeks--but not in their usual theatrical roles. This time that group--and TV stars like Morgan Fairchild, Robert Guillaume, Ed Flanders, Judd Hirsch and William Daniels--will be appearing in public-service announcements educating and fund-raising for AIDS Research. Put together by the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the 10-second spots really pack a wallop. In one, “St. Elsewhere’s” Ed Flanders asks: “Imagine you were told you had AIDS.” He pauses, then adds, “Just imagine.” In another of the dozen or so spots, Taylor asks for help: “Please join me in overcoming this epidemic of fear and panic.”

HAPPY, HAPPY--April 26 is Carol Burnett’s birthday--and by the time the date rolls around, there will be few people in L.A. who don’t know it. According to the World Almanac, Carol will be 50. Her buddy Ginny Mancini is putting together a massive party that also benefits one of their favorite charities, UCLA’s Royce 270, which supports cultural events on campus. Producer Pierre Cossette, fresh from the Grammys, will produce the show, with what seems like 270 stars--Neil Diamond along with a goodly number of the party’s committee, including Julie Andrews, Lucille Ball, Beverly Sills, Jimmy Stewart and, of course, Henry Mancini. Also on board, ABC-TV’s Gary Pudney, Wallis Annenberg, former U.N. Ambassador Jeane J. Kirkpatrick and Henry Kissinger. All the pricey tickets (up to $250) for the party--and the black-tie dinner before--are sold out, but there are plenty of $75 (includes a champagne reception) and $25 spots available in the Pauley Pavilion stands.

DEBATE TEAM--Expect an announcement shortly that the League of Women Voters has put together a panel of prominent citizens and political experts to help with the ’86 election debates. Among those names--pollster Mervyn Field; Judy Miller, vice president of Braun Co.; TV reporter Frank Cruz, and Howard Allen, chairman of Southern California Edison.

KUDOS--Ricardo Montalban and KMEX-TV’s Danny Villaneuva and his staff pick up special thanks today for their fund-raising efforts last September on behalf of Mexican earthquake victims. George Moody, the American Red Cross campaign chairman and president and CEO of Security Pacific National Bank, hosts a reception spotlighting the KMEX-TV 13-hour telethon, which raised more than $5 million . . . Robert Hooks was honored by the board of directors of W. E. B DuBois Academic Institute Sunday . . . The National Multiple Sclerosis Society paid tribute to “The Golden Girls” at a gala luncheon Saturday. Cited were Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty for having “brightened the lives of many through their constant gift of laughter.”

BEVERLY HILLS KUDOS--From the Bev Hills Chamber of Commerce on Friday night, honors went to Charlton Heston and Giorgio’s Fred Hayman. Gathering at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate were Jimmy and Gloria Stewart, Mickey and Paul Ziffren, Danny and Rosemarie Thomas, Greer Garson, Pat and Walter Mirisch. Heston was given the Will Rogers Memorial Award, while Hayman was given the Citizen of the Year Award.

CLEVER . . . those smart GOP fund raisers, who are holding a dinner Monday on behalf of The Campaign for the 100th Congress. Sure, it’s also the Democrats’ 100th Congress--but the invite to the event, hosted by Sen. Bob Dole and other GOP senators, makes it read like the anniversary is strictly a Republican affair.

MAMA, MAMA--”Mama’s Family” starts shooting again this spring, this time for syndication by Lorimar. But Dorothy Lyman--who’ll be back as Naomi Oates Harper--this week is more worried about her role as director of “Living on Salvation,” which opens at the Fountain Theater on Friday . . . To kick off the annual Young Musicians Foundation Celebrity Mother-Daughter Fashion Show, supporters will gather for a caviar and champagne reception at Tallarico Friday. The fashion show is set for March 27 at the Beverly Hilton.

ONLY IN L.A.--For people not wanting to drive themselves, but for whom a rented limo is a little conspicuous, veteran car-valet Chuck Pick and social stars Tuck and Chardee Trainer have come up with a new business--Safely There. They provide the drivers--and you provide your own car--whether it be a Mercedes, BMW, Rolls, etc. . . . Of course, there are dangers in living in this fast-paced society. Like the busy woman who made an emergency stop at Yuki, the Sunset Plaza salon last week. Sticking out of the top of her head was a round-bristle brush--trapped in a tangle of hair, giving her a mild geisha look. Yuki carefully disentangled her--then warned her about never brushing her hair while driving a car.

SAVE THE DATES--An early sell-out is predicted, since just about one-third of the 3,000 members of the Women’s Guild of Cedars-Sinai can be accommodated at the April 16 annual luncheon at the Beverly Hilton. Neiman-Marcus is doing the whiz-bang special effects fashion show and Marilyn Gersten chairs the event . . . Mothers Against Drunk Driving holds a giant gala at the Beverly Wilshire on June 5--and it promises to be an evening encounter of the Steven Speilberg kind, since that Hollywood personality has signed up.
