County : Transportation Unit May Have to Cut Staff

Share

The Orange County Transportation Commission must cut staffing by 50% and eliminate some of its workload over the next two years unless more money is found, according to a study released Friday.

The findings by Arthur Young & Co., a consulting firm, follow recent warnings by OCTC and state transportation officials that cutbacks in federal highway and mass transit funds would delay completion of some projects by several years.

However, the Arthur Young report was the first indication that OCTC may have to lay off a major portion of its own staff because of anticipated financial problems. The number of jobs threatened by the cash shortage was not immediately available, officials said.

OCTC Executive Director Stan Oftelie said Friday that the commission hopes to get more money through state legislation that would increase the agency’s share of transit money, most of which currently goes to the Orange County Transit District, which runs the county’s bus system.
