John Anderson scored a goal and assisted on three others as the Hartford Whalers snapped a seven-season jinx at the Forum with a 5-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the only NHL game Monday night.

The victory was Hartford’s first in Montreal since the Whalers joined the NHL in 1979-80. They were 0-18-5.

The last-place Whalers have 66 points in the Adams Division standings, three behind the fourth-place Boston Bruins and 12 behind the Canadiens, who are in first with 78.

Anderson scored his first goal since he joined Hartford last Saturday in a trade with the Quebec Nordiques with one second left in the first period.

He assisted on Sylvain Turgeon’s goal late in the second period and on third-period goals by Ferraro and Kevin Dineen.
