A Navy plane crashed at sea Wednesday evening while attempting to land on an aircraft carrier 100 miles off the coast of San Diego. The two fliers aboard the jet fighter were rescued uninjured, a Navy spokesman said.
The crewmen bailed out of the F-14A Tomcat fighter just before it went down at 7:30 p.m., Miramar Naval Air Station spokesman Lt. John Semcken said.
The Fighter Squadron 21 plane, based at Miramar, was trying to land on the aircraft carrier Constellation when the $33-million plane bounced off the deck and crashed into the ocean, Semcken said.
The crewmen were picked up by rescue helicopters from the carrier.
Semcken said the carrier was undamaged and was continuing with routine training exercises. The Navy is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
