SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Simi Valley’s Radinsky Strikes Out 18 in His 2nd One-Hitter of Season

Flame-throwing Scott Radinsky struck out 18 en route to his second one-hitter of the season as Simi Valley defeated Riverside Poly, 1-0, Friday in a nonleague game in Riverside.

Radinsky, a senior left-hander, had a no-hitter through 6 innings.

The lone hit came on a high hopper off the plate by John Turner. Radinsky slipped attempting to make the play, according to Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers.

“Scott was overpowering, really on top of his game,” Scyphers said. “He had excellent control.”

Radinsky walked three and faced only 22 batters. Three Riverside players who reached base were picked off.

Against North Torrance in the second game of the season, Radinsky (2-1) tossed a one-hitter and struck out 15, a school record until Friday. Radinsky broke another of his own school records by recording eight strikeouts in a row. The previous mark was seven.

Hart defeated Radinsky two weeks ago.

The Pioneers scored its only run in the second inning. Scott Sharts, a sophomore first baseman, doubled, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out by Dwane Mulville.

Simi Valley is 4-2.

Alemany 4, St. Francis 2--Brian Roselli continued his hot start by pitching his third straight complete game victory in a Del Rey League opener Friday at Alemany.

Roselli, who entered the game with an earned-run average of 1.50, struck out four to help Alemany improve its record to 5-2.

Larry Muir scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning when he singled and scored on Greg Biley’s sacrifice fly to give the Indians a 3-2 lead. Muir was 2 for 3.

Randy Thompson accounted for Alemany’s first two runs by hitting a two-run homer in the fifth.

St. Francis fell to 4-3.

Oak Park 6, Ventura Temple Christian 4--Wally Sweeterman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Eagles a dramatic nonleague victory at Oak Park.

Sweeterman had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 4.

Winning pitcher / shortstop Mike Birch (1-1) was 2 for 4 and also pitched the last four innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Oak Park is 1-3.

Bosco Tech 6, Notre Dame 5--Mario Gutierrez singled in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead the Techmen in the Del Rey League opener at Bosco Tech.

Gutierrez was 2 for 3 at the plate and teammate Victor Gomez was 2 for 4.

Rex McMackin led Notre Dame with a home run and two RBIs.

Sophomore Mike Martinez (1-1) picked up the win.

Bosco Tech is 4-4. Notre Dame is 3-4.

Queen of Angels 4, Flintridge Prep 3--Tony Calvano drove in the winning run with a double in the bottom of the seventh for the Angels.

Queen of Angels (2-3-1) entered the seventh trailing, 3-2, but tied the score on a single by Frank Trujillo.

Joe Hernandez went the distance and had 10 strikeouts to even his record at 1-1. Flintridge Prep is 2-1.

Saugus 6, Palmdale 0--John Meyers homered in his first two at-bats to lead the Centurions in the Golden League opener.

Chris Joy drove in the Centurions’ other three runs with a double in the fifth inning.

Kent Gustaveson (2-1) allowed the Falcons only two hits in 4 innings. Dennis Moran did not give up a hit in 2 innings of relief.

L.A. Baptist 6, La Verne Lutheran 4--The Knights rallied for three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning in an Alpha League opener.

L.A. Baptist tied the score, 4-4, on Casey Burrill’s RBI single. The Trojans’ walked the next four batters to force in the final two runs.

The Knights were led by Kirk Petersen, who went 3 for 4. Petersen picked up his first win of the season by pitching 2 innings of hitless relief.

Boys High School Track

Canoga Park 60, Van Nuys 52--Danny Arias and Mike Conover each scored 11 1/2 points to lead the Hunters in the nonleague meet at Canoga Park.

Arias won the 100 meter high hurdles, pole vault and was a member of the winning 1,600 meter relay team. Conover won the long jump and triple jump and was also a member of the relay team.
