Pac-10 Swimming : Stanford Wins Title
Stanford won its fifth straight Pacific 10 swimming and diving championship Saturday night at East Los Angeles City College.
Stanford had 598 points, followed by UCLA with 546, California at 477 and USC at 400. Arizona State was fifth at 365, followed by Arizona with 331, Washington with 143 and Oregon with 75.
In final events, Arizona’s Alex Mlawsky won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 14 minutes 54.83 seconds. Stanford’s Jeff Kostoff was second in 14:56.97 and Arizona’s Jeff Utsch was third in 15:02.92.
Cal won the top three places in the 100-yard freestyle, with Matt Biondi first in 43.66 seconds, followed by Tommy Werner in 44.35 seconds and Michael Soderland in 44.46 seconds.
Stanford’s Sean Murphy won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:46.41, followed by USC’s Kevin Craig, 1:49.45, and UCLA’s Elias Malamas, 1:49.81.
Dave Cademartori of USC swam the 200-yard butterfly for a first-place finish in 1:45.28, followed by Stanford’s Anthony Mosse, 1:45.49, and Arizona State’s Andy Jamasin, 1:46.25.
John Moffet of Stanford won the 200-yard breaststroke in 1:59.92.
