Renters and Their Pets
I live at a HUD project for seniors and the handicapped. In 1981 the California Legislature enacted SB 1047 permitting seniors to have pets in public housing. That prompted me to start my campaign to get authorization for HUD residents to be allowed to have pets. Since then I’ve been sending a relentless stream of letters to congressmen and HUD on the subject. My efforts finally bore fruit. However, management, in an effort to stop pet ownership demanded an additional security deposit of $1,000 so we can have pets in these unfurnished apartments.
What bothers me the most is that on the California front and nationwide, HUD residents are not being made aware that they may have pets.
