Toufic Naddi, charged with killing his wife and four of her relatives, was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial on Monday and committed to a state mental hospital for treatment.

Naddi, 45, objected to the ruling by San Diego Superior Court Judge David Gill in an unusual non-jury trial on the mental competency issue only.

Five court-appointed psychiatrists found Naddi paranoid and incapable of cooperating with his attorneys. Naddi testified he is not paranoid and should stand trial for the five shooting deaths, which occurred June 1 at his Fletcher Hills home.

Naddi was committed to Patton State Hospital for three years, but he could return to San Diego for trial earlier if psychiatrists there determine that he has regained his mental competency. His stay could also be lengthened, depending on his progress in treatment.

Naddi is charged with shooting his wife, Aida, 26; her father, Habib Sabbagh, 73; her mother, Lillian Sabbagh, 58; her brother, Michael Sabbagh, 38, and her brother-in-law, Osama Mashimi, 38, an actor from Jordan. The family came to this country from Jordan.
