An early morning fire caused $1 million worth of damage Wednesday at the Kern County public works office, authorities said Wednesday.

The blaze gutted a drafting room and destroyed computers, a copying machine and records dating back to the 19th Century. Nearby offices also were damaged in the adobe building built in the 1930s.

City fire investigators expect to take several days before determining the cause of the fire because of the extent of destruction, but arson was ruled out.
