College Baseball : Titans Aren’t the Best of the West in This Game

David Willis went 3 for 5, including a double and two RBIs, as Brigham Young defeated Cal State Fullerton, 13-4, Wednesday in the Best of the West tournament at Fresno.

Willis, a Fullerton High School graduate, led a 17-hit attack that helped the Cougars take a 7-1 lead.

Fullerton’s Pat Garman, who went 2 for 5, hit his fifth home run of the year.

BYU is 3-0 in the tournament; Fullerton is 2-1. The Titans are 16-9 on the season.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play:

CS Dominguez Hills 2, Chapman College 1--The Toros’ John Beuder had a single in the sixth inning to knock in what proved to be the winning run at Dominguez Hills. Brian Ayers (4-1) was the winner; Rob Glisson (2-3) took the loss. Chapman (1-3, 7-14) plays host to Cal State Long Beach Friday.

In South Coast Conference play:

Orange Coast 22, Golden West 5--The Pirates (5-0, 13-4) took advantage of 15 walks and 14 hits in the victory at Golden West. The Rustlers have given up 70 runs in their last four games. For OCC, Dave Staton was 3 for 5, including a fifth-inning grand slam, with 5 RBIs, and Brett Webber was 3 for 6, scoring four runs and driving in four more. Teammate Joey James hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Todd Nash and Scott Rath went 2 for 4 for the Rustlers (2-5, 6-9), who had nine hits. Sam August (5-0) was the winning pitcher; Larry Salaets (1-2) took the loss.

Cypress 12, Saddleback 6--Rey Hernandez and Jeff Nicks each went 3 for 4 with an RBI as the Chargers beat the Gauchos at Saddleback. Pat Longo and Mark Baca of Cypress added two hits apiece. Cypress (3-3, 16-4) plays host to Compton today.

Rancho Santiago 10, Cerritos 1--Sophomore pitcher Chris Shiflett (2-1) pitched a complete game six-hitter, and the Dons scored six runs in the fourth inning to hand the Falcons their first conference loss. Shiflett lost his shutout in the top of the ninth, thanks to a one-out single by Brett Barberie.

The Dons (5-1, 11-3) received four walks, two errors and two wild pitches from the Falcons, all in the fourth. Dave Kirkpatrick and Troy Barnhart each scored two runs and drove in two. Matt Baltran was 3 for 5 with one RBI. Cerritos is 4-1 in the SCC and 11-4 overall.
