NHL Roundup : Carpenter and Capitals Beat Jets, 5-3

Bob Carpenter scored two goals, including the game-winner at 4:33 of the third period, as the Washington Capitals beat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-3, Friday night at Landover, Md., to move within a point of the first-place Philadelphia Flyers in the Patrick Division. Washington has won 9 of its last 11 games.

The Flyers have a chance to pad their slender advantage in a game against the New York Rangers today before visiting the Capital Centre for a showdown against Washington on Sunday afternoon.

Winnipeg remained in third place in the Smythe Division, three points ahead of the idle Kings.

Edmonton 5, Minnesota 4--Jari Kurri scored at 1:46 of overtime as the Oilers won at Edmonton.

Kurri’s 61st goal came after Wayne Gretzky set him up with a pass. Kurri banked a shot off the post behind goalie Don Beaupre.

Edmonton’s Mark Napier sent the game into overtime, scoring at 15:46 of the third period.

New Jersey 6, Buffalo 3--Mel Bridgman, Pat Verbeek and Uli Hiemer had third-period goals at Buffalo as the Devils beat the Sabres for the first time in 11 games.

New Jersey scored the last five goals, snapped a six-game losing streak and set one-season records for most wins (23), most road wins (10) and most goals (270).

Calgary 5, Vancouver 5--Lanny McDonald scored on a 20-foot slapshot from inside the faceoff circle at 12:21 of the third period as the Flames came from behind to tie the Canucks at Calgary.
