Teachers Union Endorses City Council Candidates in L. B.

LONG BEACH — For the first time in many years, the 2,000-member Teachers Assn. of Long Beach has endorsed candidates in City Council races.
The association announced its backing of Jenny Oropeza in the 14-candidate District 1 race, James Serles in District 3 and Ray Grabinski in District 7.
Oropeza, Serles and Grabinski all support district election of school board members, rather than the current citywide method of election. All endorsed candidates told the union that, if elected, they would vote to impose fees on developers to help pay for new classrooms, the union said.
Though not endorsing in District 9, the union reminded members that incumbent Warren Harwood supported an unsuccessful 1984 ballot measure that would have imposed district elections on school board races.
