Slide Blocks Coast Road to Big Sur

Share

California 1 south of Big Sur will remain closed indefinitely because of a large landslide that blocked the highway a week ago, Caltrans said.

The conditions are so dangerous at the slide at Redwood Gulch, about 20 miles north of San Simeon, that pedestrians are not able to cross, Caltrans officials said.

The slide covers the highway for 300 feet and originates about 500 feet above the road. On Friday, slide movement was making it impossible to determine when the highway might be reopened, Caltrans engineers said.

The highway has been closed from Ragged Point in northern San Luis Obispo County to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, 10 miles south of Big Sur in Monterey County. Northbound travelers to Big Sur should drive to Salinas and then take California 68 to the coast.
