Division II : Cal Poly Pomona Wins, 70-63, for Its Second Straight Title
Debra Larsen and Debbie Flett each scored 19 points as Cal Poly Pomona defeated North Dakota State, 70-63, to win its second straight NCAA Division II women’s basketball championship Saturday.
The championship was the Broncos’ third in the past five years. They won the first NCAA Division II women’s tournament in 1982, finished second in 1983 and won again last year.
Flett, Larsen and Vicki Mitchell, who finished with 14 points, contributed to an 8-2 surge opening the second half to give the Broncos a 49-39 lead with 16:28 to go.
Cal Poly (30-3), ranked No. 1 all season, got 16 points and 7 assists from guard Michelle McCoy. Larsen also had 11 rebounds.
North Dakota State’s Pat Smykowski led all scorers with 20 points. Janice Woods added 18 points for the Bison (24-9).
Larsen was voted the tournament’s outstanding player. McCoy and Mitchell were named to the all-tournament team.
