San Diego
A San Diego man who allegedly tried to attack a police officer with a fragment from a police car light bar was shot Sunday evening in Southeast San Diego, police said.
George Edward Balboa, 35, of Logan Heights, was shot once in the groin by Police Officer Stephen Paul Williamson, 31, who had stopped at Sampson Street and Oceanview Boulevard to dismantle and repair the light bar on his car.
Police spokesman Lt. Phil Jarvis said Balboa began “acting strangely” by “walking into the side of the (police) car and bouncing off.” Balboa came away from the car brandishing a two-inch steel piece from the light bar and Williamson fired three shots, hitting Balboa in the groin area and grazing his ribs, Jarvis said.
Balboa was listed in fair condition at UC San Diego Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. Jarvis said Balboa, who is under guard at the hospital, will be charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
